Last week against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Falcons had red zone touchdown percentage of 57%. That’s not an awful number, but it is one that absolutely has to improve.
The number is created by the number of red zone touchdowns a team comes up with, divided by the number of offensive possessions in the red zone that team has. Obviously, turnovers and field goals are negatives for this stat.
The Falcons had a bunch of red zone possessions in Week 1 against the Chiefs. They had more than a team probably would normally have. Atlanta was able to get into the red zone seven times against the Chiefs, and only came away with four touchdowns.
Don’t get me wrong, four touchdowns is very good. If Atlanta get four touchdowns overall let alone red zone touchdowns every week, the Falcons stand a very good chance of winning every week. That being said, against teams like the Broncos and others around the league, it will be necessary to be competitive in shootouts in order to win. If you scored touchdowns in the red zone rather than field goals, the Falcons add another twelve points. Against some teams in the NFL, it will require that for victory.
